Richmond Plastic Surgeon Debunks Common Myths About Breast Implants

Dr. Zemmel provides the truth behind common breast augmentation myths.

Dr. Neil J. Zemmel responds to five myths about breast augmentation with implants to provide a more accurate portrayal of the popular procedure.

Richmond, VA – Anyone researching breast augmentation will likely find there are numerous options available for achieving the right look—from the implant type and size to the placement and incision techniques. In an effort to help patients make an informed decision about their breast augmentation procedure, board-certified plastic surgeon Neil Zemmel, MD, FACS provides in-depth consultations to go over the different options. The Richmond plastic surgeon says that while many patients come to Richmond Aesthetic Surgery with extensive knowledge of their implant options, there are several myths that can be misleading when they plan for their procedure.

To help anyone considering the procedure gain a better understanding of what to expect, Dr. Zemmel responds to five common myths below:

One type of breast implant is better than the other. While some individuals prefer one type over the other, Dr. Zemmel says saline and silicone breast implants can both provide beautiful results for the right patients. He notes that each implant type has its pros and cons, and the best option ultimately depends on the patient’s unique needs and personal preferences.

Breast implants are chosen based on the desired cup size. Although bras are measured by cup size, there is no standard measurement for these sizes, causing some brands to fit differently than others. For the greatest accuracy, breast implants are measured by cc’s (cubic centimeters). Although the exact cup size cannot be chosen, Dr. Zemmel says it can help to have the desired cup size in mind during the consultation.

Breast implants cause systemic diseases. No scientific evidence has proven that breast implants cause systemic diseases. However, Dr. Zemmel acknowledges that in rare cases, women have symptoms of breast implant illnesses; he addresses these unexplained reactions on a case-by-case basis, in some cases recommending breast implant removal. Although no direct link has been found between breast implants and autoimmune diseases, studies have found a possible link between Breast Implant-Associated Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (BIA-ALCL) and certain implants, including textured implants by Allergan®, which were recalled in July 2019.

Breast implants will last a lifetime. Saline and silicone breast implants are not designed as lifetime devices. As a result, they may need to be replaced in the future due to their vulnerability to rupture, deflation, and rippling over time. On average, breast implants have been found to last up to 15 years before their structure becomes compromised. However, many women enjoy their breast implants for longer than this without experiencing any issues.

Any cosmetic surgeon is qualified to perform breast augmentation. Despite the fact that breast augmentation is an incredibly popular plastic surgery procedure, the surgery comes with risks. Always seek care from a plastic surgeon who is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, as these physicians have demonstrated their commitment to upholding strict safety and care standards. In addition to reducing your risk of complications, choosing a board-certified plastic surgeon experienced in breast augmentation is likely to produce a more favorable aesthetic outcome.

When it comes to breast augmentation, Dr. Zemmel recommends patients do their research and consult with a qualified, board-certified plastic surgeon. During the consultation process, he encourages patients to ask questions, explain their aesthetic goals, and express any concerns they may have. With this open doctor-patient communication, Dr. Zemmel believes patients can play a more active role in their treatment and achieve a more satisfactory outcome.
