When you’re out having fun and enjoying the outdoors, it’s easy to forget to apply sunscreen or wear a hat to protect yourself from the sun. Unprotected skin can be damaged by UV rays in as little as 15 minutes but it can take up to 12 hours for your skin to show the full effects of sun exposure. Even if it’s a cool and cloudy day, UV rays do damage. Though clouds can help filter them, it’s the UV rays, not temperature, that do the damage.
Skin Cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. The two most common types are basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas – which are highly curable. But melanoma, the third most common, is more dangerous. Anyone can get skin cancer, but there are a few factors that put some people at a higher risk:
- naturally lighter skin tone
- personal/family history of melanoma
- skin that burns, freckles, reddens easily, or becomes painful in the sun
Protect yourself from skin cancer by wearing sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, and sun-protective clothing, especially during midday hours (10:00am-4:00pm), when UV rays are the strongest and do the most damage. Also keep in mind that UV rays can reflect off of many surfaces like water, cement, sand, and snow. Avoid tanning beds and sunlamps – the UV rays from them are just as dangerous as the sun’s.
REMEMBER: Always use a sunscreen that has an SPF of 15 or higher AND states protection against both UVA and UVB rays
